The short answer
Should side sleepers use a body pillow?
If you sleep on your side and already reach for something to hug, or tuck a pillow between your knees, yes: a body pillow puts both in one place, so you’re not rebuilding a pile every night.
If a single pillow under your head already feels right, you may not need one. If you do want one, these are the four things worth checking.
What to look for in a side sleeper body pillow
- Long enough to reach your kneesThe MoonSpoon is 59 inches tip to tip, sized for people under 6′0″.
- Fill that holds up between your kneesVegan down you can top up or take out: both covers zip.
- Something behind you, tooA crescent curves, so you can lie back into it. A straight pillow only sits in front of you.
- A cover you can washThe outer cover zips off; Lunair, EverMoon and Satin covers are machine washable.
Why a crescent
Why a crescent body pillow suits side sleepers
A straight body pillow lives in front of you. A crescent curves, so one pillow reaches your arms, your knees and your back, whichever way you face.

- 1Hug the top curve
- 2Rest a knee over the bottom

- 3The inner curve sits along your back
- 4The bottom tip goes between your knees
…it is also so helpful as a side sleeper who needs something both between my knees and something to hug while still having my head supported.
The side sleeper pile
Four pillows, or one.
One to hug, one for your knees, one at your back, one under your head, rebuilt every night. Or one crescent that stays with you when you turn over.

“Ordinary” means a straight body pillow at the standard 20 × 54 inch size. MoonSpoon figures are from its product page and, for the bed-size line, customer reviews.
I've been a side sleeper pretty much my whole life, so I need the extra support of something between my arms and legs, but straight shaped body pillows were never quite right for some reason. This pillow has solved all of my woes!

Side sleeper body pillow FAQ
Straight answers, including the trade-offs.
Looking for something to cuddle? Read the cuddle pillow guide →Should side sleepers use a body pillow?
If you sleep on your side and already hug a pillow or tuck one between your knees, a body pillow puts both jobs in one place, so there’s no pile to rebuild every night. Look for one long enough to reach your knees, with fill that holds up between them. If one pillow under your head already feels right, you may not need one.
How do you use a body pillow as a side sleeper?
Lie on your side facing it, hug the top with your arms and bring the bottom between your knees. Keep your usual pillow under your head. When you turn over, roll inside the curve and the pillow ends up behind you, so you don’t have to pull it across the bed. The MoonSpoon page shows five positions in all: big spoon, little spoon, hammock, fortune cookie and donut.
What shape of body pillow is best for side sleepers?
It depends on what you want held. A straight body pillow is the smallest and usually the cheapest, and it only sits in front of you. A U-shaped pillow surrounds you on both sides and usually takes the most room. A crescent like the MoonSpoon sits in between: hug the top, tuck the bottom between your knees, and lie back into the inner curve when you want something behind you.
Does the MoonSpoon replace a knee pillow?
That’s what it’s shaped for. The bottom tip goes between your knees while your arms hug the top, so one pillow does what a knee pillow and a hug pillow did.
Can I keep my regular pillow under my head?
Yes. Keep your usual pillow under your head and hug the MoonSpoon in front of you. Or curl into the middle of the curve and keep your own pillow there too: the MoonSpoon page calls that position the donut.
What if I switch sides during the night?
Roll over inside the curve: the pillow you were hugging ends up behind you, so you go from big spoon to little spoon without rebuilding anything. I tend to flip from side to side in the night. And I love going from little spoon to big spoon!

Is it too big for a shared bed?
It’s big: 59 inches tip to tip and 24 inches at its widest. On a queen, reviewers say it takes up a third to half of the bed. One wrote: Super big and takes up half of my queen sized bed.
(Dior, September 27, 2026). On a king, one reviewer puts it at about a third. Some reviewers share it with a partner; others say it crowds a shared queen.
Will it go flat?
It arrives extra full and relaxes over the first few nights. After that, both covers zip, so you can add or take out fill whenever you like, and your first 3 lb fill pack is free in your first year (one per order, US orders).
I’m tall. Will it fit me?
It’s sized for people under 6′0″ for the best full-body fit; the model in the product photos is 5′7″. Taller customers are split. One wrote This is the perfect pillow for tall girls, I'm 6'1 and it's the perfect size for me!
(Vera, June 15, 2026). Another wrote My only thing I wish is that it was longer I feel like I’m a little bit tall for it like maybe 6-12 inches longer…
(Lauren, July 9, 2026).
How do I wash it?
The outer cover zips off. Lunair, EverMoon and Satin covers machine wash cold with the zipper closed (Satin on a gentle cycle); line dry them, or tumble dry Lunair on low. The limited-edition Croissant cover follows its sewn-in care label.
